I'm an asshole when it comes to comics

Read this article, from my local paper about the Silver Scorpion's creation by a group of disabled kids: http://www.tampabay.com/incoming/disabled-youths-construct-new-muslim-comic-book-superhero/1124375

Now, why I'm a douche; the Silver Scorpion is about a guy in a wheelchair that instantly reminds me of Prof X's hoverchair (mixed with The Chief's Battle Chair from Doom Patrol 94). And then his power is to control metal, much like X-Men villain Magneto. but hey, maybe the character is different. It's not like Nazi Holocaust  victim Magneto was influenced by war.

So here's some kids, trying their best to do a good thing for a good reason, and all my cynical comic-fan mind can do is think that this is a huge rip-off and  MY rip-off's of comic characters never made the paper.

I disagree with this Shaggy shirt

Outwardly, yes Shaggy seems like a slacker. He's lazy and just wants to eat all the time. But, depending on the series, he's either spending over 300 days a year on the road investigating strange rumours, or defending his million-plus dollar inheritance from all sorts of crooks. I'd be hard pressed to find one 'hard-worker' who's done more with their life then Shaggy has!

Up does not make you jump higher

Been playing Super Metroid for hours on end this week, and when I acquired the Space Jump I proceeded to die a slow, agonizing death multiple times by repeatedly falling on spikes after my first spin. For years, I've had the habit of holding up when I jump - like that would magically make me jump higher. I've been doing it since the NES days, but in SM it will kill you, as up breaks you out of a spin jump, and for space jump you need to continuously spin. It took me a good 20 minutes to get comfortable doing it, and I sure haven't mastered it yet, though I'm good enough to get it to get me everywhere I need to go with only a few hiccups.

Beating Ridley, however, is something I cannot even come close to getting. :/

He will never be Diddy to me.

It's Sean Combs or Puff Daddy or Puffy if you're more then a casual acquaintance, but thats it.

Remember Bloodhound?

Bloodhound was a short lived 2004 series from DC Comics. It was about a normal man named Travis Clevenger, who is released early from prison just because he's exceptional at hunting down meta-humans. A cool book from Dan Jolley and Leonard Kirk, it should be very easy and cheap to pick up (it ran for 10 issues).

Go read up on some old interviews about it:

Seems Dan's regained the rights for it, and has been very busy in the years since. Check him out at his website. http://www.danjolley.com

Magic the Gathering needs to gather more sharks

Sharks are awesome; I think we can all agree on that. But in Magic, they are few and far between. There's only two! So shark tribal is pretty hard to pull off. Still, lets have a look:

Ah, The Dark. This set actually had some really awesome cards, like Preacher and Witch Hunter and Elves of Deep Shadow and the ever-amazing Leviathan. Giant Shark is NOT very awesome, even to a Timmy like me. The +2/+0 would be pretty cool, and ALMOST make up for the fact its a sic cost islandhome (Sea Monster wasn't available yet), but the restriction of the opposing creature already needing to take damage kills it. Pingers were still in blue's colour pie at the time, but its still very hurtful.

I like this card from Stronghold better. It still needs islands to attack, but can at the very least block without them. Its a 2/3 wall that can situationally attack, and with lots of cards that create islands the drawback can be managed, if you were so inclined to do so.

And those are all the sharks the games got. It has at least one other card with sharks on it (below - and if you know more lemme know!), but thats it. There are a greater variety of 2/2 bears then there are of sharks at all! I like bears, but thats not cool.

Groovy - More Duke Nukem

Having recently played some classic Duke you can download on X-Box, I'm excited to see Duke Nukem Forever coming out! No, seriously. In 2011. Thirteen years. Damn. Also, this cartoon rocks:

I've enjoyed the EC Archives Shocksuspense volumes.

They really do feel ahead of their time, but thats probably based on my prejudices and uninformed views of the the 1940's and 50's. As I've been exposed to more from the era (in literature, movies, and comics), I've found that it wasn't nearly as conservative as I had been led to believe. It's not just in the horror and crime genre either; I've been collecting The Complete Dennis the Menace, and there's as much (if not more) sexual content and undertones then modern mass newspaper strips. But the point of this is to say the EC books are really good, but are seemingly going back out of print very quickly so if you like horror, sci-f, war stories, adventure, crime...give them a try and do it fast. I'm hoping the out of print volumes will come back (like Tales of the Crypt and Weird Science vol. 1), but because of money issues I can't be certain.

Shocksuspense is my drug of choice because of the variety; there's four comic stories in each, a horror, crime, sci-fi, and a 'wild-card' shocksuspense story. These don't really fit into any one mold and are usually the best of the issue. The first one from issue 1 is Yellow (turned into an episode of the Tales From the Crypt tv show) about a father in the military dealing with his sons cowardice in battle. Another of my favourites is called The Patriots, which focuses on blind patriotism and its costs. Despite coming out in 1952, these stories in particular teach the same lessons today that they did almost 60 years ago. Anyway, EC books are awesome, find them if you can, even if its just to read them once.

Aborted Series Sketches

Artist name is now lost to me :/ Jeff Kipnis from Lightning Squirrel? I don't think so...A little sci-fi/comedy story  about a sea-side small-town sheriff that falls in love with a mermaid and has nautical adventures. For some reason I had it placed on the west coast, and I never do that!

Supergirl by Dean Trippe

This is one of several sketches I've had done, this one from Megacon 2005.  http://tencentticker.com/deantrippe/

Looney Tunes Back in Action

I've been into Golden Age cartoons a lot lately, watching a lot of Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry, and reading about the characters and their creation. While reading the history of Porky Pig I found out that WB was picketed  by the National Stuttering Project for the example being set, and that he was in the Back in Action movie complaining about how hard it was for him to be pc (along with sometimes pariah Speedy Gonzales). Well, based on that alone I had to see this flick.

Overall, I was pretty happy with it! Its a funny movie with some great character moments, and its full of Warner history and cameos and call-backs. Like Scooby and Shaggy threatening Matthew Lillard to do a better job playing Shaggy in the next movie.

And Daleks, because Steve Martin lobbied for them! This whole scene is FULL of classic aliens.

The cast is good, with the already mentioned Steve Martin, and small or bit parts by Timothy Dalton, Peter Graves, and Ron Pearlmen. The one to catch my eye was Heather Locklear as a sexy assassin, sexily dancing with truly creepy/awesome live-action Yosemite Sams.

There's a lot to like here if you're a Looney Tunes fan, and I suggest you check it out. Its got enough slapstick for kids and enough homages and gags that any adult would enjoy it too. And while I didn't talk about him much, this is really Daffy's movie, and he gets more time then any other toon. As a Daffy fan, I really appriciated that!

I know i just posted a picture of  Locklear and used sexy in the sentence twice, but I can't resist posting an image of the REAL sex appeal from this movie:

Th-th-th-thats all folks.

Grand Theft Auto: Marvel

'Marvel Adventures' is an all ages line from Marvel Comics, so most people automatically assumed it was dumb and for kids. What they really were was mostly self-contained stories set in a loose-continuity world where fun, exciting stories could be told; stories like this one where Dr. Doom steals Johnny's car.

In short, Doom feels his property was taken by Reed so he is simply exercising his rights to take it back. The Fantastic Four invades Latveria and we get a funny look into the college days of Reed and Doom.

Great stuff from Jeff Parker, who of course now is tearing it up in the Marvel U proper. If you like being entertained, you can do worse then tracking down these backissues.
